FDNY Ladder 20 & Engine 13, SoHo, NYC

This firehouse is located at 247-253 Lafayette Street in Manhattan. Records claim it dates from 1968 but the cornerstone states 1973. The base is clad in a dark brick with lighter tan and orange brick on the upper floors. The metal signage all looks original, including the “Medical Division” above the central doors. The architects were Dominick Salvati & Son, a firm which appears to have begun the 1920s and still exists today. Records show them responsible for a wide range of projects from apartments and schools to churches and gas stations. A 1989 synagogue in Brooklyn for which they acted as consulting architects with Robert A. M. Stern Architects is even noted in the NYC AIA Guide.
