Cardinal Wright Regional School, Pittsburgh, PA

This school at 711 West Commons is within the larger Allegheny Commons urban renewal area. It was originally built in 1964 as St. Peter’s Catholic Elementary School to serve the church immediately next door, but it closed in 2011 most likely due to shrinking enrollment. The building’s prominent features include the teal enamel bands at the windows and the bright stained glass featured at the entrance and side lights. The  overhang of the upper floors cantilevered over the base gives the structure an unwieldy quality.
