University Lutheran Center, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA

This modest religious structure was built in 1969 by Pietro Belluschi and Alexander Ewing & Associates at the corner of 37th and Chestnut Streets. It is also known as University Lutheran Church of the Incarnation and a good history of the congregation is here. Belluschi was a renowned modern architect and former dean of architecture at MIT. He has a large body of work on the west coast, especially in Oregon, where his practice was based. However there are numerous examples across the US as well and this site has featured Belluschi here and here. Ewing and Associates was a local Philadelphia firm who also collaborated with Belluschi on the design of the Rohm and Haas Headquarters in Center City Philadelphia.
