Calhoun School, Upper West Side, NYC

After saying I could find very few buildings designed by architect Costas Machlouzarides, I went looking for some of them. One is a fantastic, colorful church I will feature in an upcoming post.

One of the others is the Calhoun School, at the corner of West 81st and West End Avenue. Machlouzarides designed the original five story structure, which opened in 1975, according to the open space plan the school requested with enormous amounts of windows on two primary facades and a unique television set-look. Unfortunately in 2004, a large addition by FX Fowle completely changed the look of the building. Here is a picture as the original building looked with much more information from DOCOMOMO and here is a picture of the addition going up.
